Hindu groups were up in arms here after a 28-year-old Hindu woman was allegedly poisoned by her estranged Muslim lover in Kotwali area of Muzaffarnagar late on Tuesday evening.
While the woman, who is said to be a divorcee, was referred to Meerut Medical College, Muzaffarnagar police booked Ubaid Rehman, the lover, under section 328 (causing hurt by means of poison) and 307 (attempt to murder) of IPC. He was arrested on Wednesday.
Superintendent of Police (city), Omvir Singh, said “Rehman, who is already married, was having an affair with the woman. Following an altercation between the two, Rehman allegedly gave her poison.”
Speaking to TOI, medical college’s Chief Medical Superintendent Dr Ajeet Chaudhary said, “The poison is suspected to be sulphas (a pesticide) tablet.”
Soon after getting the information, a large number of Hindu rightwing groups reached Muzaffarnagar district hospital, where the woman was first taken to, and demanded immediate arrest of the culprit.
After the woman was brought to medical college in Meerut, Bajrang Dal and VHP activists reached the spot. Western UP convenor of Bajrang Dal, Balraj Dungar, said, “This is a clear love Jihad in which a Hindu woman has been lured by a married Muslim man. This is a clear reflection of sinister attempt of love jihadis to poke fun at the Yogi government. And, hence strict action needs to be taken against those who dishonour Hindu women.”
However, Rehman said, “The woman was well aware of my marital status. We were friends for the past 4-5 months. Because of her erratic behaviour, I had stopped talking to her because of which on Tuesday afternoon she came to my shop and consumed poison.”
Meanwhile, the woman is now out of danger.
