Continuing the trend of saving the best for last, Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani at the 40 Annual General Meeting enthralled shareholders and users’ alike with key announcements about the Reliance Jio Feature phone.
Comparing costs with existing smartphones that have a starting price of Rs 3,500, Ambani stunned the patiently-waiting audience by stating that the Jio Phone will be available to all Indians at an effective price of Rs 0.
‘The Jio Phone will be effectively free for Jio customers’, he repeated.
Addressing the possibility of misuse, Ambani clarified that the Jio phone will be available by paying a 100 per cent fully refundable security deposit of Rs 1,500. The deposit would be refundable after a period of 36 months by returning the used phone.
Besides offering free voice and SMS, the Jio Phone will be a solution to extortionist data charges, he added
“From August 15, 2017, Indians will have access to the most affordable 4G feature phone. This is how RJio will end digital exclusion in India. This is what I call digital freedom,” Ambani said.
Reiterating on ‘Make In India’, the Chairman confirmed that starting the last quarter of this year, all Reliance Jio phones will be Made in India; and that the company is targeting to sell around 5 millions phones every week.
Indian smartphone maker Intex had earlier confirmed that it is in the final stages of talks to manufacture the Reliance Jio feature phone, however, the deal is yet to be inked.
The phone will be available for beta testing on the 70th anniversary of India’s freedom. The general public can pre-book the phone from August 24 and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis from September.
“Reliance Jio will make the 2G feature phone obsolete. We will set a new world record,” he concluded.
