Hindustan Times Mocks Badminton Star PV Sindhu And Gets Slammed By Mahesh Bhupathi

Badminton star PV Sindhu made millions of Indians proud on Sunday after putting up a heroic performance at the World Badminton Championship and bagged the silver medal in a final match which literally went down to the wire which was called by many to be one of the best badminton matches they had seen.

The Hindustan Times though was not very happy with her performance and decided to outright belittle her achievement by calling her a choker. Choker means a sports Person with whom the expectations are heavy but the person is a big time failure.

Almost a year on from claiming the highest honor in the history of Indian badminton (a silver at the Rio olympic), Indian badminton queen PV Sindhu  claimed silver at the World Badminton Championship  after narrowly being beaten by Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara 19-21, 22-20, 20-22.

In an epic, gruelling final that clocked 110 minutes, Sindhu lost the first game but came back superbly to claim the second with a scarcely believable 73-shot rally. In the dying stages, however, Rio Olympics bronze medalist Okuhara overtook Sindhu to win gold.

Sindhu’s silver made it two individual medals for India at the World Championships – a first – with Saina Nehwal taking home bronze. Following her match, Sindhu spoke to the media in Glasgow. Excerpts.

Hindustan Times, When Sindhu ‘won’ the silver at Rio, it was a unique occasion – an Indian woman had claimed the metal for the first time at Olympics. Given India’s poor returns from the world’s greatest event, it was worth celebrating. But how long will India celebrate being the second best?

A year on, 22-year-old PV Sindhu has emerged a stronger athlete, technically and mentally. Since Rio Olympics, she has won China Open, India Open and Syed Modi GP Gold titles. But is that enough? This may sound harsh but the Glasgow loss was a failure. A big one

HT said, In the last one year, Sindhu has played 17 matches that stretched to the third game. She won 10 and lost seven. Six of those seven losses have come against players who were unseeded or seeded below her. A top-5 player of the world certainly has to have a better record than that.

Omar abdulllah also slammed HT:
