Seven people have been arrested in the Nawabganj area of Bareilly district in Uttar Pradesh after some local residents alleged that a man was forcibly converted to Islam.
However, the man in question, Brijmohan of Shivnagra village, has debunked the rumours and has said that he converted of his own volition so he could marry a Muslim woman.
The news of the man’s conversion spread after he reached an Eidgah on June 26 to offer namaz.
Brijmohan’s elder brotyher Sunder Gupta and some local residents objected to the conversion, alleging it hurt their religious sentiments, reports PTI.
Based on Gupta’s complaint, a FIR was yesterday filed against Brijmohan, Jamal, Nanku, Irfan and three others for “luring people into religious conversion”.
“A matter of religious conversion has come to light. It is being probed. Seven persons have been arrested in this connection,” Superintendent of Police (Rural) Ravindra Kumar Singh said.
