CM Siddaramaiah is against Modi’s speech on Swami Vivekananda?

The University Grants Commission (UGC)’s direction asking all the institutions to live stream Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speech – to mark the 125th anniversary of Swami Vivekanand’s speech in Chicago and also the centenary of RSS leader Deen Dayal Upadhyay – has not gone down well with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

“There was no need for the students to watch prime minister’s address. If Modi is speaking on Deen Dayal Upadhyay, it could be on Hindutva…there is no need for the students to listen to such a speech,” reports The Hindu quoting Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

It may be recalled here that the UGC had issued notifications to all the educational institutions to live stream prime minister’s speech from Delhi. Along with the UGC, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) too had issued circular to technical colleges. The theme of the programme was ‘Young India, New India – A Resurgent Nation: from Sankalp to Siddhi.’ According to the circular, “It is requested that the above event is propagated effectively and interested students obtain the facility to view such a significant programme that could be life-changing,” reports Hindustan Times quoting the circular.

The circular further said that Swami Vivekananda’s teachings were of importance to today’s youth to understand and absorb it to ensure their right educational, career and spiritual growth.

Following the notification, all the universities in the state had made the arrangements to stream the speech. But it was reported that some of the institutions could not telecast the speech as they were not prepared. And some colleges did not have the facilities to do that. The Mysuru University too had made arrangements to live to stream the speech.

Though the circular made it mandatory for the students attend to the speech, some of the institutions said it was up to the students to catch the prime minister speaking. A few students reportedly protested against the circular making it compulsory for the students to listen to the speech in Mysuru.
