Though Dakshina Kannada district has been branded a communally sensitive region, in a classic example, the president of a Hindu temple committee, by donating his private land to a nearby masjid committee for its expansion plans, has set a precedent.
Mohan Rai of Olemundovu village under Keyyur gram panchayat of Dakshina Kannada district in Karnataka, who is also the president of Eliya Sri Vishnumurthy Temple, has donated 12 cents of his land to a masjid located next to his property – heralding the communal harmony amid the talk that say otherwise.
In fact, the committee of Olemundovu Masjid had requested Mohan for the land for its expansion plans. Mohan, who was also participating in programmes at masjid, on December 15 agreed to hand over 12 cents land to the committee in the presence of Masjid Committee president Puthu Monu, Khatib Sayyadalavi Thangal Masthikundu, leader Umar Musliyar and Renjaladi Islamic Centre convener K R Hussein Darimi.
Hussein Darimi said it was a memorable day for the villagers of Olemundovu. “Every Indian should show such generosity. There is nothing in this nation that is bigger than Hindu-Muslim unity,” he added.
